Why Study Studio Art at Goucher?
The studio art minor combines intensely engaged faculty, and the professional facilities of a larger school, with the personal attention paid to each student's artistic and scholarly development only possible at a smaller college. The minor in studio art offers a vast forum of ideas and concepts preparing you for a wide range of disciplines. You will have access to a shared studio space for interaction with classmates. Our faculty and staff will help cultivate your passions and build on experiences for your career and are dedicated to a liberal arts education that prepares you within a broad, humane perspective for a life of inquiry, creativity, and critical and analytical thinking. The Nancy G. Unobskey Visiting Artist Program enables the Studio Art Program to bring internationally recognized artists to Goucher’s campus and provides students with meaningful and significant access to the artists via exhibitions in the Silber Gallery, studio visits, discussion groups, and lectures. Some previous visiting artists include Linda Montano, Ann Hamilton, Whitfield Lovell, Mark Dion & Layla Ali.
LearnWhat Will You Learn?
What Will You Learn?
Since it was founded in 1885, Goucher has been firmly committed to excellence in liberal arts. You will demonstrate your knowledge of aesthetic traditions and conventions in assessing the merit and value of artwork; build on existing academic, analytical, and technical abilities across a range of media; and examine the role of the visual arts in the 21st century with societal and cultural conditions underscoring the current creative landscape. The studio art minor will encourage you to learn traditional skills and explore visual problem-solving within an open curriculum.
The Meyerhoff Arts Center, located in the heart of the campus, houses the program's offices, the studios for drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture & 3D, ceramics, print media, and its seminar and lecture rooms. Photography and digital media courses (imaging, sound/sonic art, video, interactive media, kinetic imagery, and animation) utilize one of two digital classrooms located in Van Meter.
Our minor complements many areas of study, including majors such as visual, library, and material culture; integrative arts study; digital arts; communication and media studies; as well as a secondary minor education in art history and a concentration in arts management.
DoWhat Will You Do?
What Will You Do?
Studio art classes emphasize independent thought and experimentation in transforming materials to communicate emotions and ideas, which prepares you for serious inquiry, whether in research or studio practice. You’re able to bring your own experiences and skills into a community of peers.
Our Art & Research Practicum course brings artists, gallery directors, and curators into the classroom for in-depth conversations and interaction. You will have the opportunity to visit galleries, museums, and artist-run spaces throughout Baltimore, Washington, DC, and Philadelphia.
With the diverse medium offered you will leave with an expansive portfolio to launch into graduate school or a professional art career.

Opportunities & Internships
Scholarships and Awards
The Spencer Award
The Eleanor Spencer Award is granted each year to a rising sophomore who has declared a major in art history or studio art. It funds outstanding research projects requiring travel to complete. Proposals are submitted to the department chair early in the spring semester and are reviewed by the program faculty.
Internships
Internships help students explore possibilities, apply classroom learning, and gain experience. Explore internships and credit options.
Internships for college credit are possible through established relationships with area museums, arts organizations, artists, galleries, and design studios, as well as through professional relationships researched by the student. These provide students with hands-on experience and help them establish professional contacts. Certain courses are open to Goucher students at a consortium of institutions, including the Johns Hopkins University, Maryland Institute College of Art, and Towson University.
Student Employment
Student employment connects students to both on and off-campus opportunities. The Career Education Office provides resources and support to students with or without Federal Work Study to find jobs, submit applications, and learn more about the job search process. Students have access to Handshake — a website for job postings, events, resumes/cover letters, and career management.
Major & Career Exploration
Exploring career options, choosing a major, and making career decisions is a multi-step process in which all students are encouraged to engage early and often. Goucher students have a variety of resources available through the Majors and Career page to assist them in this process.
Job Search
A Goucher education prepares students for today’s job market and beyond. Students can explore job opportunities and access job search resources through the CEO Job Search page.
Graduate & Professional School
Students access resources for searching and applying to graduate and professional school through the CEO Graduate and Professional School page, through faculty and staff members, or utilizing their own resources, network and tools.
